Born October 7, 1983 in Las Vegas Nevada, Marnie Baker grew up just outside of Las Vegas with her parents, Jocelyn and Karl, at their residence in the desert (read compound). The Bakers were reactionaries; anti-government, pro-gun and generally anti-social, they raised their daughter to trust her weapons more than her fellow humans.

Marnie was home schooled, and, as an only child, oddly socialized. She has always been more comfortable around adults, or people older than her own age group. She received her online Associate’s degree from the University of Arizona Online Degree Program in Multidisciplinary Studies. She is not sure what she wants to do or where she wants her life to go. She has yet to go on a date, and has formed no lasting friendships other than Todd, her parents’ closest friend.

She has gone out some in Las Vegas, clubs here or there, infrequently. Has not drunk or done drugs, but she does smoke when she goes out. She tends to rebuff advances, not quite sure how to handle people either coming on to her or chatting her up.

Marnie’s life was one of relative routine, between light workouts, running, practicing her shooting and gun maintenance, sparring with her parents or their close friend Todd “Turkey” or various small pursuits.

At least it was until the night of her 21st birthday, October 7th, 2004.

Thursday, October 7th, at 8:47pm, the alarms around the compound sounded.

Jocelyn & Karl checked the monitors in the security room, and found nothing. They thought it might be a false alarm until the sounds of the front doors being battered in and the windows shattering all around the first floor carried up to the second floor. With still nothing showing on the monitors, Karl shoved Marnie into the panic room and tripped the lock, telling her not to come out until everything was finished.

From the panic room monitors, Marnie could see forms start to appear on the first floor, saw them racing almost faster than she could follow around the first floor and towards the stairs. Karl never had time to fire his weapon. Jocelyn only fired once before the intruders were upon them.

Marnie’s father was killed in the first rush, his throat torn out so that his spine peeked white, and her mother was disarmed and held immobile as easily as a small child. Marnie watched, screaming, as 4 of the intruders latched on to her father’s body and seemed to … eat at him, tearing his limbs off like a doll’s. Jocelyn started screaming, pausing only long enough to draw breath, as one of the two remaining intruders calmly broke her arm at the elbow.

“Sing for me while we eat you, little human …” she heard a man's voice say. His voice was gentle, melodiously foreign.

And Jocelyn calmed. And Jocelyn sang. She sang a lullaby from Marnie’s childhood, while the man who spoke started to change. His face grew gaunt, his fingers lengthened and he no longer looked quite human. The man opened his mouth and showed long incisors, tensed briefly, and struck into Jocelyn’s neck.

Jocelyn never missed a word of the lullaby until she passed out from blood loss, this strange man’s pale hand stroking her hair all the while. She died as the last person, a woman, bit her on the other side of her throat.

Marnie tried to release the locks for the panic room to get out at her parent’s killers, to stop or kill them, but the locks held, leaving her in the 4x6 room. She beat on the door, bloodied her fists, screaming for her parents to hold on, she was trying to get there, trying to get to them.

Marnie looked back to the monitor for the hallway, saw and heard the four who were eating her father, drop the pieces of him they still gnawed and start a high keening as they ran towards the door by which she stood. The impact bowed the steel door. Marnie back away so suddenly she knocked the monitors off the table to explode in a shower of sparks on the floor, trailing cables and wires as they bounced to a standstill.

The keening grew louder, and Marnie heard snuffling and sniffing through the crack at the edge of the door. Long, ragged, dirty nails crammed through and widened the crack, and Marnie, desperate, slashed at the fingers with her knife. Whoever, whatever it was, shrieked and tried to pull the door off even more fiercely now, and Marnie watched in horror as the cut … just … healed.

“Quiet! QUIET I SAID!” the same person who told her mother to sing said. The four creatures fell silent, quit clawing at the door, quit snuffling like pigs after a truffle. “Take the children out; I wish to see what it is we have cornered.”

All sounds from the other room ceased. Marnie held her knife in front of her, wondering who was making those small whimpering noises.

The door gave one gigantic screech, came free from the lintel and was tossed aside as if it weighed no more than a thick book.

There stood the man who had broken her mother’s arm, Jocelyn’s blood staining his mouth and chin, his long teeth showing in an amused grin.

“Well, well, well. Little rabbit. What is it you think you may do with that knife? Hmm?” He slowly walked into the room, and terror such as she had never known filled Marnie.

“Will you stab me, little rabbit? Hmm? Do you wish to put that knife into me? It will avail you nothing, child. You are so very afraid … it is like … perfume on my tongue … would you like to strike me? To cut me down? Are you such a fierce little coney? Hmm? Be fierce, little coney. Stab me.” Marnie shrank back into the corner, looked down and saw she still held the knife, her mother’s lullaby playing in her head. “I SAID STAB ME!! DO IT! NOW!” the creature commanded.

Will she did not know she had surfaced, and she stabbed the man-thing so hard and so fast into his chest she thought she may have bruised him with the hilt of the knife.

He smiled, pulled the knife out of his chest, licked it clean, then backhanded Marnie into a wall and she knew no more.

***

Marnie woke in the hospital in Las Vegas, three days later, with a policeman looking down on her.

Marnie gave her statement, told the police everything that happened, again and again. Most of what she told them was discounted as trauma or nightmare, or quite possibly drug induced hallucinations. After several hours of on-again, off-again questioning, the police left and she slept. She dreamed of her mother singing a lullaby.

Marnie was told by Todd of the complete destruction of the compound. Todd found her when he came to investigate the billowing smoke clouds he saw, beside the road leading to her home. He took her to look at what was left when she was released from the hospital, the left side of her face still covered in deep black bruises.

The police have been able to find no clues; her parents’ bodies were burned almost completely except for bones.

Todd helped Marnie to get an apartment at the Koval Apartments close to the strip in Las Vegas, and her parents’ estate is expected to be settled by the end of the month. Their memorial services were held privately on Thursday, October 14th, and went generally unnoticed in the happenings in Las Vegas. In the interim, she works as a part-time clerk in a grocery store near her apartment.

Marnie dreams of the man’s voice she heard, whispering in her mind, of her parents' murders, the sounds of her father being eaten, of that healing sliced hand and the snuffling keening, chasing her as she runs. She dreams of fangs and blood, and of that creature yelling “STAB ME!” and licking her knife clean. She dreams of never being in time to help her parents. She dreams of blood and lullabies.

"Sleep, love; forever sleep.
Your soul the night will keep.
Embrace the darkness deep.
Sleep, love; forever sleep."

Marnie received an invitation to a Masquerade at the newest to be hot spot, Nocturne, and went to check out the open announcement regarding the club. “An event to die for, eh? What else is left? Maybe I’ll go.” The costume Marnie chooses is that of Janis Joplin, rose coloured glasses, feather boa and all.
