It also was home to the famous French-style revue, "Lido de Paris". Friday nights, when Lido was dark, the Stardust hotel featured master magician Gregory Vendredi. Gregory was no ordinary illusionist however, but a voudoun-practicing Tremere. He wowed audiences every Friday night with his eerie but compelling act. In 1959, when Johnny Horton's famous song was a hit, he performed a special act commemorating the battle and the victory over the British. Little did anyone suspect Gregory's involvement in the battle. In the early 1800's, Gregori Vendredi worked as a two-bit magician on street corners in the French Quarter of New Orleans. His family owned a nearby plantation, but he cared not for the trappings of their wealth, and at 16 struck out on his own trying to eak out a living. He did the occasional odd job, but he loved performing magic on his breaks. He was amazingly good, as he'd practiced since his youth. But without a famous name or a place to regularly perform, he was limited to the streets. His interest grew into wanting to know more about the creole voodoo, but no one would share their religion with him. He considered that to be real magic, and always asked the local mambo, Michele, a free Mulatto half-breed, to show him a little. She explained a lot, but never showed him her secrets. After the War of 1812, the British were looking to take control of New Orleans, wresting it away from the young nation who recently bought Lousiana from the French. The rumors became fact however when Andrew Jackson came to town weeks before Christmas in 1814 without an army to secure the port town. Gregori Vendredi was one of many residents who joined the ragtag 2000-man militia in order to protect his home at any cost. The battle was a bloody massacre, and while Jackson's militia did deal a blow to the British, it did not come without its casualties. Gregori would have been one of them if he had not been saved by Mambo Michele. But when her mojo did not act soon enough to save the young man, she turned to her other magic arsenal -- the blood of the seven Tremere elders in New Orleans, of which she was one. When he awoke, embraced into the clan, she trained him in the arts of voudon and Thaumaturgy. The idea of magic was not limited to the religion of voudon in Gregori's eyes, and over the years he mastered many illusions of the trade, as well as Tremere thaumaturgical rituals. He performed a few nightly acts in the French Quarter, but still never gained any fame. This allowed him to hone his other rituals however, and he did so for more than a century. In 1958, however, he got word of the new casino being built in Las Vegas. He convinced the owner that a magic act would do well when the "Lido de" girls were off. Gregory's act lasted as long as Lido did; both were replaced in 1992 with "Enter The Night", which closed seven years later. It was in 1999, of course, that the Stardust nailed the act of Vegas legend Wayne Newton. People have often joked about Newton's youthful appearance and longevity. But Newton, now in his early 60's, is still human. People made the same comments about Gregory when his show ended. He however, is about 200 years old. Rituals he knows: LVL 2 - Donning the Mask of Shadows LVL 3 - Raven's Haven (*) He wishes to follow the Path of Conjuring.
